The house belongs to Sarah Stanley, the Director of luxury holiday rental company Unique Home Stays, but the interiors were styled by Paul Hervey. Here, Paul explains how the Regency wood burner adds a comforting warmth to the countryside cottage.
Q: Were you always keen to have a wood burner in the property?
A: Absolutely – a wood burner is such a central focal point in a room. I love the way they bring such life to an interior space – there is nothing nicer on a cold winter afternoon to be snug with the wood burner aglow, a good book and mug of hot chocolate!
Q: What stove did you pick in the end and why did you choose it?
A: We picked the Regency because of its simple and attractive appearance, and the fact it was recommended to us by friends who already had one. I loved the way it fitted the fireplace space perfectly and offered an excellent heat source.
Q: How did you go about finding the perfect stove and fitting it?
A: We had been recommended Stovax by friends and I had fitted one of their wood burners in a previous cottage we had refurbished earlier in the year – I was impressed by the large range offered.
Once we had calculated the space and the heat output and had our chimney checked, it was then just down to choosing the model we liked the best – we had the wood burner installed by an experienced fitter recommended by a Stovax supplier, who did an excellent job.
Q: The Fable has a really homely feel to it – what was your inspiration for designing the interiors?
Reclaim, reuse and reinvent were the starting points for the interior scheme – I wanted to embrace the age and character of the building and felt it was essential we used vintage pieces throughout.
I loved adding all the antique pieces – the gorgeous vintage painted cupboards and chairs with all the layers of paint visible, the eccentric pieces such as the galvanised washbasin and the beautiful claw foot bath and the deep linen sofas offset with linen cushions, wool throws and faux fur blanket. It really is the perfect English cottage set deep in the rolling Cornish countryside.
A very unique property, sitting in front of the fire and visiting all the beautiful beaches nearby. Thank you for a lovely relaxing place to stay!
