Tell us more about your luxury lodges and your interior style.
Foss Escapes is a collection of three private luxury lodges nestled in the North York Moors National Park.
Each lodge sleeps two and is designed as a complete escape — somewhere to genuinely disconnect and reset. The interior aesthetic is modern and considered, with a strong emphasis on natural materials: dark oak slat walls, concrete-effect stone panels, herringbone timber floors, and deep, tactile soft furnishings in earthy tones. We wanted the lodges to feel both architecturally striking and deeply comfortable — the kind of space where you arrive and immediately exhale.
What fires have been installed and why were they chosen?
We have three Gazco gas fires across the lodges, each chosen to suit the individual character of the space.
The Squirrel lodge features the Gazco Loft, the Owl lodge has the Gazco Vogue Midi T wall mounted, and the Badger lodge has the Gazco Vogue Midi T Midline.
We were drawn to the Gazco range because each model offered something distinct while sharing the same quality of flame picture and finish. The cylindrical, freestanding form of the Loft suits the more open, dramatic living space in The Squirrel; the wall-mounted Midi T in The Owl creates a clean, architectural feel; and the Midline in The Badger sits beautifully within the stone feature wall. Despite being three different products, they feel cohesive across the site — which matters when you’re building a brand with a consistent aesthetic.
We also love the simplicity of the remote control. Guests can adjust the flame and heat from the sofa without a second thought — it’s a small detail that makes the whole experience feel effortless and considered.
Which rooms or areas are they installed in, and why that location?
The fires are installed in the main living space of each lodge, positioned against the stone feature wall and directly adjacent to the full-height glazing that looks out across open moorland. The placement was very deliberate — we wanted guests to experience the contrast of the warm flame against the wild landscape beyond the glass. It creates an atmosphere that’s hard to put into words but immediately feels special.
What drew you to a Stovax & Gazco product?
Reputation and design integrity. We spent a long time researching fires that could hold their own in a high-specification interior, and Gazco consistently came up as the benchmark. When we saw the products in person, the decision was straightforward. The quality of the finish, the quality of the flame picture, and the reliability of the product all gave us confidence — these lodges are a commercial operation and we need everything to perform, night after night.
How have the lodges benefitted from having these fires installed, and why is it important that each lodge has a working fire?
The fire is central to the entire atmosphere of the lodges, particularly from autumn through spring. Guests frequently mention it in reviews — it’s one of those details that elevates a stay from comfortable to genuinely memorable. There’s something primal about an open flame that no amount of underfloor heating can replicate. For us, a fire isn’t a feature — it’s fundamental to the experience we’re creating.
Any further advice or tips for those renovating and looking to achieve a luxury aesthetic?
Restraint. Every material and every product earns its place or it doesn’t come in. We’d also say: invest in the things guests will touch, sit in, and look at every day — the bed, the sofa, the fire. Those are the things that form lasting impressions. And don’t underestimate the power of layered lighting; the Gazco fires contribute enormously to the ambient quality of the space in the evenings, in a way that overhead lighting simply can’t.
