Tell us a bit more about your home project and your style.
In 2018, we accidentally bought a derelict Victorian Villa after a mix-up of auction lots, in the seaside town of Dunoon, Scotland. Instead of cutting our losses, we decided to take on the restoration of this beautiful building.
We have aimed to make our restoration as sustainable as possible, and bring back original Victorian character to our home – our home style is a balance between of traditional Victorian style and features mixed with more modern touches.
What do you like most about the stove you’ve had installed?
The Stovax Sheraton 5 is the perfect mixture of traditional and modern design, and I really think its timelessly beautiful. The stove has a classic shape, while also boasting a huge window, which modernises its traditional look – and allows for a beautiful warm glow when burning.
Where did you get the stove installed in your home, and why that location?
We had our stove installed in our open concept kitchen/living room. It’s centred in the lounging space, and makes for a cozy place to retire to on a winter evening. This room is the centre of our home – we have our friends over for weekly dinner and movie nights, and the stove creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere – both from its heat and the soft glow of the fire. With the cost of living going up, the stove has also managed our heating bill – we can keep this well used space warm in the evenings, while setting the temperature low in bedrooms.
What drew you to a Stovax product?
We knew that Stovax had an excellent reputation for quality, and that they provided a range of highly-efficient stoves. This is what initially drew us to considering them for our stove. I loved the beautiful design of the Sheraton 5 – that is what sealed the deal!
What was the greatest challenge when undergoing your renovation?
Our greatest renovation challenge has always been budget – but we’ve learnt to see past this, and remember that buying high-quality items, rather than the cheapest, will be very helpful in the long-run. I would rather the project takes a little bit more time to finish, because we have to do a few more paid projects in between, than have to replace everything in a few years because it’s been done cheaply.
Why is it important to you to have a fireplace?
We wanted to have a fireplace in our home to limit the running costs of heating our home, and to limit our reliance on the grid. With the increased cost of living, and weather patterns becoming more unpredictable and severe, we are happy to know we will always have a way of heating our home.
What tips or advice can you provide to others undertaking similar renovations?
Take things on bit by bit – it can be overwhelming to consider any renovation project as a whole – but if you work on one task at a time, everything becomes a lot more manageable.
