Tell us a bit about how the project started…
We found this property just days after I realised I was pregnant. The estate agents had just one picture of the house which consisted of a dilapidated wooden gate obstructing the front two storeys of the property. The house needed a complete renovation; it ticked so many boxes such as having a fire, en-suite bathroom, space for a garden (originally a concrete car parking space) – it was was exactly what we were after so we snapped it up straight away!
Q. Were you always keen to have a wood burner in your home?
A. It was always our intention to install a wood-burner, it’s a “no brainer” with regards to safety and fuel economy compared to an open fire. Designing/styling rooms with wood-burners/fires is always a pleasure; they can create an ambience and focal point that nothing else compares to – in my opinion they turn a house into a home!
Q. What fire did you choose in the end?
A. We chose the Riva 66 cassette wood burner, we were drawn to its clean contemporary lines and the practicality of the cassette design working with the existing heightened fire opening.
Q. How did you go about finding your fire?
A. Both my husband and I work in interiors so we were familiar with Stovax’s products and their reputation for manufacturing wood-burners that last a lifetime. Having decided on a cassette style wood-burner we did our research but the Riva 66 “stole the show”.
Q. Was it always the plan to have such a modern fire?
A. Due to the characteristics of this property either a traditional or contemporary wood-burner could have worked; However, we were both drawn to the clean lines and practicalities of the Riva.
Q. The house has a beautiful modern/traditional style – what were your inspirations for the interior design of the property?
A. Marc and I could easily be described as eclectic collaborators; Marc’s gifted at re-configuring interior/exterior spaces to maximise their potential and we both share a passion for colour and materials.
Creating your own home is slightly different to working for clients or production companies because you don’t need to design and style a room within a short time-frame.
The design process is more of a journey; the pleasure we take in creating a fun yet functional home is ongoing: “the journey is the destination”
Q. Where do you generally find inspiration for your designs?
A. Our designs are inspired by architecture, art, textiles, travel, food, nature, people, and the realities and practicalities of everyday life.
