Sustainable Forestry and the Environmental Benefits of Wood Burning: All you need to know

Discover how sustainable forestry and advanced wood burning technology converge to offer an environmentally conscious heating solution, that doesn't just warm your home, but also helps in nurturing the planet.

Forests have long stood as symbols of life, resilience, and sustainability. When managed correctly, they offer an array of environmental benefits. At Stovax & Gazco, we’re proud to champion the cause of sustainable forestry and highlight the environmental benefits of wood burning. With a heritage rooted in quality and a deep appreciation for nature, we believe in harnessing the power of wood to create efficient and sustainable heating solutions.

Burning wood for heat has many benefits and, when burnt responsibly on a high efficiency Stovax stove or fire, it offers a natural, sustainable solution to home heating.

1. Sustainable Forestry: A Win for the Environment

Before diving into the advantages of wood burning, it’s essential to understand what sustainable forestry entails:

Selective Logging: Instead of clear-cutting vast tracts of forest, sustainable logging focuses on selective cutting to ensure the forest remains healthy, preserving the ecosystem and allowing younger trees to grow and mature.

Replanting & Regeneration: For every tree cut down, several more are planted, ensuring that forests continue to thrive and expand over time.

Habitat Protection: By maintaining a balanced and diverse forest, sustainable forestry protects habitats for countless species, ensuring biodiversity.

2. Wood burning: A Carbon Neutral Source of Heat

Carbon Neutral Cycle: Unlike fossil fuels, wood releases approximately the same amount of carbon into the atmosphere as that absorbed during its growth, making it a virtually carbon neutral heat source.

Reduced Reliance on Fossil Fuels: As we pivot away from fossil fuels, wood offers an alternative that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. When sourced from sustainable forests, wood burning is a step towards a more sustainable future.

3. Efficiency of Modern Wood Burning Stoves

Stovax & Gazco’s commitment to the environment is evident in the design and manufacturing of our stoves and fires.

All of our stoves and fires feature Cleanburn technology for high efficiency heating with low emissions, making them DEFRA-exempt (with an appropriate smoke control kit fitted if specified) in Smoke Control Areas.

They also meet, and in many cases even exceed, stringent Ecodesign emission and efficiency standards. Our Ecodesign products represent the cutting-edge of low emission stoves, reducing particulates by up to 84% in comparison with old appliances. Our high efficiency Ecodesign technology is engineered to generate the maximum amount of heat from your fuel, with minimal emissions.

In delving deeper into the efficiency of wood burning stoves, it’s crucial to highlight the superior efficiency of glass-fronted wood burners compared to their open-fronted counterparts. Glass-fronted stoves, a key feature in many Stovax & Gazco models, are engineered to keep the heat in and burn the wood more slowly and efficiently. This design significantly enhances heat output and energy efficiency, with many models achieving efficiency ratings of up to 80% or higher, compared to around 20-25% for open fires.

Furthermore, these stoves minimise heat loss, ensuring that more warmth stays in your room and less goes up the chimney. This not only results in a more sustainable use of resources but also provides a more economical heating solution, reducing the amount of wood needed to maintain warmth and comfort in your home.

We believe this is the future of solid fuel heating, which is why the Stovax Heating Group is proud to offer the largest range of Ecodesign wood and multi-fuel stoves and fires in the UK and Ireland.

4. Sourcing Your Wood and Supporting Local Economies

Choosing one of our high efficiency low emission stoves is a great step towards burning responsibly.

To ensure your stove provides optimum heating performance, only wood with a low moisture content should be burnt. Seasoned logs should be allowed to dry for at least two years or more to achieve a moisture content below 20%, which can be easily checked with a moisture meter. When purchasing seasoned or kiln dried wood, look for the Woodsure “Ready to Burn” certification which guarantees logs will have less than 20% moisture. Good quality dry wood will not only provide a higher heat output than that of freshly felled timber, it will also avoid a build-up of tar in your flue and ensure low smoke emissions with clean and crisp flame visuals.

By sourcing this wood locally, you can bolster local economies and ensure a shorter supply chain with reduced carbon footprint, as well as it being easier to check that they follow sustainable forestry practices, so you can be sure your wood is sourced responsibly.
