What to do if you don’t have a chimney

If you want a log burner and don’t have a chimney – don’t worry! You may still be able to have a stove in your home. Read our advice below for what to do if you don’t have a chimney.

Wood burning, multi-fuel and conventional flue gas stoves and fires all need a chimney to be able to function. Here is what you can do if you do not have a chimney in your property.

I’m set on a real wood burning stove – what are my options?

If you really want a wood burning stove, but you do not have a chimney, there are options available to you.

Firstly, you may be able to install a pre-fabricated chimney system. This works in the same way as a normal chimney, and can either run internally to your property, or externally. For example, our Stovax Professional XQ range offers a specially designed chimney system that can be installed to meet almost any flue requirements.

What are my other options if I don’t want a chimney system?

There are many other options available to you if you choose not to install a pre-fabricated chimney system. Firstly, have you considered gas? Many gas fires and stoves come as balanced flue versions, meaning that they do not need a conventional chimney system to operate.

Balanced flue gas fires vent directly through an outside wall using a twin-wall pipe where air for combustion is drawn in, and combustion gases escape. A balanced flue system negates the need for a chimney, and can exit either horizontally through an outside wall or vertically through the roof depending on the stove or fire you choose.

For example, the Gazco Reflex 105 Multi-Sided gas fire – one of our most realistic gas fires – is available as a balanced flue model, and allows you to feature a dramatic multi-sided fire display in a chimneyless property.

Ease of electric

Of course, if neither wood burning stoves or gas fires appeal, electric fireplaces not only do not need a chimney to function but also can require as little as you like in terms of installation.

Some electric stoves can simply be placed in a room in a position you desire, and plugged into the mains to function. Other built-in electric fireplaces, such as those used for a media wall, need a little more in the way of fitting – but ultimately only need connection to the mains.

What’s more, Gazco’s range of electric fires and stoves offer realistic fuel and flame effects, all of which can be enjoyed year round without the heat – perfect for cosy spring and summer evenings.

Who can help me with my installation?

In all cases, ensure you speak to your local retailer. From electric fireplace media walls, to gas fires or wood burning stove chimney systems, your local retailer can offer trustworthy expert advice. Find your nearest retailer here.
