Solid fuel stoves burn wood and/or mineral fuels and provide a powerful heating solution for your home. Depending on your preferences and home, there are a few things to consider when choosing your wood burning and multi-fuel stove.
Solid fuel stoves can be selected in two fuel types; dedicated wood burning appliances and multi-fuel appliances.
Dedicated wood burning stoves often feature slightly larger viewing windows than multi-fuel stoves, and have a flat bed inside the stove. This is because wood burns best on a bed of ash.
Multi-fuel stoves give you the flexibility to burn wood or mineral fuels. They feature a riddling grate to allow air to circulate beneath the fuel for optimum burning conditions. Mineral fuels take up less room than wood for the heat they provide. They also burn for longer, making them good option for high output boiler stoves that may be providing heat for the whole home.
Wood burning and multi-fuel stoves and fires can either be installed into an existing fireplace or, if your home doesn’t have a chimney, using a prefabricated flue system such as our Professional XQ range.
Adding a stove to an existing fireplace is relatively straightforward. However, you will need to have your chimney checked before installation. Your local retailer will be able to organise this to ensure the chimney is airtight, and they may require it yo be swept. A flexible liner can be dropped down the chimney to connect to the stove if required.
Prefabricated chimney systems allow your stove to be installed without a masonry chimney. Depending on your preference and requirements, you can opt for an external flue system that is mounted to the exterior of the property or one that is fitted internally, travelling up through the house and exiting through the roof.

Towns and cities are often located in Smoke Control Areas as designated by the Clean Air Act 1993. Burning logs can only be done on a DEFRA exempt appliance. These stoves and glass fronted fires have passed a series of tests to ensure they do not produce unpermitted levels of smoke.

Wood burning multi-fuel stoves need a hearth made from non-combustible material to protect the floor around the appliance from high temperatures. This usually means a slab of stone or concrete that is higher than the floor around it and corresponds to the appliance’s hearth requirements. Many stoves in our range have been designed to only require a 12mm hearth, allowing for a sleek installation. These minimal hearths can be often be created from special toughened glass to help them blend in with your interior. Your retailer will be able to advise on which type of hearth is needed.
