Justin Hooper, Scotland, Utilitarian & Contemporary
Justin, Scotland
November 28, 2018
The renovation of HMS Owl, a World War II Royal Naval Air Control Tower, saw Justin Hooper escape to Scotland with his family, away from London’s hustle and bustle.
Justin then turned to his next project – the Nissen Hut. A Nissen hut is a steel structure that was made for military use originally, shaped as a half-cylindrical steel building. These structures were used extensively during the Second World War.
With a utilitarian origin, the vision for the Nissen Hut was to re-create the shape of the original hut and turn it into a contemporary space that paid homage to its roots. Fitting in with the general scheme of Justin’s surrounding buildings, the Nissen Hut was made black, giving it an understated finish yet plenty of presence, and over six months, it was updated to be a place of comfort and high quality interior design.
On talking about the difficulties he faced during this project, Justin said: “working out the most economical way to roll the steel was a challenge, as well as creating the supports for the roof structure.”
Heating the hut was an essential part of the renovation. Due to the availability of wood in the area, Justin’s requirements were that the building was heated entirely by wood burning appliances. Justin had previously opted for Stovax stoves and fires in the main building (HMS Owl), and felt that they fitted both the required aesthetic as well as keeping the building warm in the depths of a Highland winter. This led him to choose Stovax again.
The Vogue Medium with Midline Base and Studio 3 Freestanding were chosen for their quality and design, complementing the Mid-Century utilitarian style throughout.
If you would like to enjoy the stoves for yourself, the Nissen Hut is available to be booked on Airbnb.
