Bert & May Spaces Furnish Their Boutique Barge with a Stovax Contemporary Stove
Bert's Barge Project, London
October 28, 2015
Bert & May have selected Stovax’s contemporary styled View 5 Midline wood burning and multi-fuel stove to warm one of London’s most beautiful and unusual homes, their boutique urban barge project.
The British artisan design company, whose luxury, bespoke products decorate the homes of high profile clients, launched Bert’s Barges as their latest avant-garde interior design venture.
Allowing owners to cruise the City’s far reaching canals and live within walking distance of their work or favourite restaurants and shops; these bespoke barges are one answer to the astronomical property prices young London professionals are faced with.
Whilst looking out at the canal which runs behind the Bert & May showroom, Lee Thornley, founder and creative director of Bert’s Barges, was struck by the idea of building his own barge as an affordable alternative to a one bedroom flat in Hackney – which can sell for up to three times the price.
Working with designer and interior stylist Laura Fulmine, Lee’s hand-picked team designed and built the barge as a luxurious floating suite. Handmade Spanish tiles and Italian fittings adorn the large bathroom; marble worktops clad the kitchen and luxury Atelier Areti lighting illuminates the Scandinavian-inspired décor. In order to create a clean, modern interior the barge features a large open plan living space with white wood panelling and flooring for a spacious and airy feel, with as much natural light as possible.
When it came to heating the living area, the team knew that product specification was essential. The long and narrow dimensions of the barge meant that there were a number of considerations – the stove needed to be big enough to heat the spacious interior but also compact enough to maintain minimal distances to combustibles.
Equally as important was the stove’s aesthetics. The chosen appliance not only had to fit with the designer décor, but also shine as the centrepiece of the living area. Critically the View 5 did not disappoint with its tasteful, clean and geometric styling and Midline log store base which made it a natural choice for the minimalist interior.
Given the barge’s mobile nature, the team decided on the flexible View 5 multi-fuel stove so that either logs or smokeless fuels could be burnt, depending on which was easiest to come by when moored. To be able to burn fuel in the built-up areas the barge was designed for, they specified a Smoke Control Approved model for clean burning and minimal smoke emissions.
When it came to the important task of safely fluing the stove, the design team chose to use Stovax’s Professional XQ flue system, which thanks to the range of components allowed for both easy installation of the stove and safe removal of combustion gases. The specially insulated, twin wall flue sections not only accounted for the barge’s naturally perpendicular walls, but also ensured the wood interior was protected from high temperatures.
Bert & May have also recently launched Bert’s Boxes – a collection of luxury prefabricated homes – for which they selected Stovax’s Studio wood burning fires as a designer heating choice.
