Scenario Architecture creates interconnected living space with Stovax Studio Duplex woodburner
Scenario Architecture, Victoria Park
March 14, 2018
Working with a dark and underused ground floor and old conservatory, Scenario Architecture had quite the challenge when they were briefed to create a simple and clean space, with almost no furniture or decoration. Unlike heavily designed spaces, in projects such as these, every detail is extremely paramount. Seeing this beautiful, minimalist home in Victoria Park on Houzz, we contacted Scenario Architecture to learn more about their design process and what drew them to the Stovax Studio Duplex wood burning fire when they set out to achieve their clients’ aims.
How long has Scenario Architecture been running, and how did the business start up?
Scenario Architecture has been running for 10 years – we are currently in the 11th. Our Directors Maya Carni and Ran Ankory started the office following their studies at the AA.
What approach do you take with your clients when briefed with a project?
We have established a very unique way of dealing with a client’s brief. We have them complete a questionnaire where they describe their everyday living patterns, what they like doing and what they would want to do. Sometimes they will have to contradict themselves, however this way we get the most valuable information. After we receive their brief (the more detailed the better) we translate it into a 3D diagram where all the activities are represented in 3D space with the required space as well. We see how these activities need to interact with each other, in terms of proximity, views, etc and we create the various scenarios (hence the name scenario architecture) that will shape our design.
How did you go about sourcing the fire for this project?
From the brief as analysed and used above, we needed a focal point that would allow heat, an attractive view, and inter-connectivity between two spaces. We had to use an open (free standing) or a two-way window fireplace.
What drew you to Stovax’s products?
Stovax had the right model for us at the time, as it fitted in our minimalist approach. The specific product was allowed within our budget, and followed the slick lines we intended. Also it makes for a prominent feature without creating too much noise visually.
What was most rewarding about this project?
In this project, the final result gave us exactly what we hoped. A tranquil environment, surprisingly bright, with lots of different views, without being fully open plan. The two-way fireplace helped a lot with this. This gave the impression that the house is much bigger and complex than it really is.
And the most challenging?
The most challenging thing was to stay within budget and create this sort of complexity mentioned above. We believe we reached our goal as the project was featured in many magazines and newspapers (for example Grand Designs and The Sunday Times).
How long did the project take from start to finish?
It took us from May 2013 until October 2014 – this included the design, planning, budget coordination and value engineering, construction, and finishing the space.
