Based in Blackheath, south east London, Mike wanted to open up a dark 1950’s house, and renovate it to become a light and airy home. Opting for a Stovax wood burning fire, he told us more about the remodel.

Tell us a bit about your home project.
Our home renovation was a complete remodel of a 1950’s house, both internally and externally. It was originally very cold and dark, with lots of rooms. We opted to remove all internal walls and open up the entire ground floor, creating a more expansive space and brightening the area. The idea was to have the fireplace as the centrepiece so it can be enjoyed throughout this floor.
Which fire did you go for and which fuel type? What drew you to this model?
We went for the Stovax Riva 50 wood burner, mainly due to its sleek look and the fact that it is by far the best inset fire out there – it really went with our contemporary style. The installation process was very easy once we got our heads around all the building regulations!
How would you describe your interior style?
Our interior is very modern and a few people have mentioned it is a cross between Scandinavian and Japanese. Our architect’s wife is from Sweden and we use to live in Japan, so I think this happened naturally.
