In Pannal, near Harrogate, Carol and Majid’s impressive water tower home is hidden beneath a sea of trees. After a three-year project, their grand design has an industrial feel to suit the original structure – but they chose a Nordpeis Quadro 2T wood burner to make use of the woodland around them.
Tell us a a bit about the project…
We bought the water tower after a battle at auction – for twice the guide price. We saw the project as an adventure, and a chance to create something that was ours. The project was contracted by Sykes of Horsforth builders, who did a great job, and we did most of the planning ourselves.
There were a few bumps along the way, but once the build was finished, we’ve ended up with a really spectacular house.
Q. Had you always wanted a wood burner to be part of the property?
A. Yes, we always wanted a wood burner – it makes total sense as we are in the middle of a woodland, and we had to fell a lot of trees for the project, so we had a good fuel supply.
Q. Why did you pick the Nordpeis stove in the end?
A. We wanted the burner to look industrial and also be tall in the double height room – the Nordpeis Quadro is modern and suits the style of the tower.
Q. Was there a specific part of the house you wanted it to be in?
It is situated on the open plan kitchen living space, so is a major feature when people come into the tower.
The Pannal Water Tower was featured on Channel 4’s Restoration Man Revisited.
