Anouska, Stockton 4, Victorian Home
Anouska Lancaster, award winning interior designer and founder of Noushka Design shares her inspirations and thoughts on her wood burner. Anouska’s house is a spectacular combination of patterns and colours which all work together to create a homely feel. She has chosen a Stockton 4 to install in her living room and her family huddle round it in the colder evenings. She says “Not only does it create a visual focus in a room, but it’s almost like a physical magnet, in that people are drawn to it. Everyone wants to sit by the fire, it’s a natural draw.”

Tell us a bit about how the project started?
My husband and I had been looking for the perfect family home for some time when we came across the house. It is a red brick Victorian character property located on a picturesque Church Lane. We fell in love with it instantly. Greig and I could see that it had heaps of potential, but we also knew that it was going to be a huge task. The house needed gutting, and completely refurbishing from top to bottom. As well as refurbishing the original property, we also needed to extend it; as we have 4 children and needed the extra space. We added on a huge orangery, which would accommodate the kitchen and the dayroom. This was designed to be the hub of the entire house, and although it was new, we wanted to keep it in character of the original house as much as possible. This was the room that we designed around the Stovax stove. We knew it was a vast space, and we felt that a log burner would not only heat such a large area, but would add the perfect focal point the room.
‘A wood burner creates a visual and a physical focal point’

Q: We love the colourful interior of your home, what inspires you?
A: My ethos when I set up Noushka Design was to create a design company that specialised in bespoke interiors that truly reflected the individual’s personality and passions. I believe that your home should be a true reflection of you and your story, embodying your passions and lifestyle. Most importantly, your home should be a sanctuary where you feel happy and content. Our home tells our story and makes us happy.
My inspiration comes from everything I see; I am literally a creative sponge! I am hugely inspired by art. Being a trained artist, I have a very strong connection with art. I love how a painting can evoke feelings as well as be visually pleasing. I will often design a room around a piece of artwork. Somebody’s artwork tells a lot about that person’s personality and journey.
Q: Were you always keen on having a wood burner in the property?
A: I was always keen on having a wood burner in the property. I truly believe that a wood burner makes a house a home. Not only does it create a visual focus in a room, but it’s almost like a physical magnet, in that people are drawn to it. Everyone wants to sit by the fire, it’s a natural draw. The fact that it actually heats up the entire ground floor is an added bonus!
Q: Why did you pick the Stockton 4 in the end?
A: Being totally honest, we were hugely lead by the experts at ‘Exclusive Fireplaces’ in Sandhurst, Berkshire. The staff were incredibly helpful, and gave us the most suitable option following an onsite visit during the renovation.
Q: Do the family like the wood burner?
A: The family all love the wood burner. As the house is Victorian, it struggles to get really warm in the winter. Well, all the rooms except the one with the wood burner! This results in 6 of us and a dog cuddled up around the fire during the winter months! We have a large 6 bedroom house and yet we all huddle in the kitchen were the wood burner is.
