Tell us a bit about your conversion
The chapel dates from 1880 and when we bought it had been part converted but it didn’t do the chapel justice, so we had to really strip it back and start again in a lot of areas. We also added an oak framed extension at the back as it was quite dark internally and didn’t have a good connection to the garden, which as keen gardeners was really important to us, as well as making the most of the views at the back!
We relocated the kitchen into the main open plan room at the back of the house and it has transformed the way we use the space and how it feels. The room the kitchen is now in has become a cosy snug. The garden also took a huge amount of effort. We did it ourselves over a couple of years turning it from a rough bit of grass to what you see today. We’re currently about 4 years into the work and are nearly there, but there are lots of finishing touches still to do, and we’re not sure you ever quite ‘finish’ somewhere like this!
Which product did you go for?
How did you know this stove would work in your converted chapel?
We didn’t – but our son (@manwithahammer) had a Dovre Vintage 50 and absolutely loved his and could see it really working in the space. The fireplace is huge so needs something big enough not to get lost in there and the room is large so we needed something that threw out a lot of heat. We did have a different stove initially and it just wasn’t cutting it. To make the stone fireplace (that was already in the house) feel a little more contemporary and really make the stove pop, our son suggested tiling the interior of the opening and it really works and ties in some of the other colours in the room!
What do you like most about owning a log burner?
When it’s on it’s almost like having company – it lifts the whole room and provides a real focal point. We love how efficient it is too – kicking out lots of heat without going through logs at a rate of knots.
Was installation straightforward?
Yes – it went without a hitch! The technical team were really helpful in sorting an external air kit so we could room seal the stove which really helps keeps draughts to a minimum with such a powerful stove!
