Tell us your home style?
The project was to renovate unused areas of a farm house owned by my parents, to split the property for 2 families to cohabit, but to have a room for entertainment. The room is now known as the HUB, this is where the fire is.
What do you love most about your home? What is your favourite feature?
Inspiration happened as we went along, we commissioned an architect to convert the a swimming pool gym, this involved removing pool and removing reinforced concrete, we basically took the floor to the bottom of the pool. We also had to remove walls and we have 2 levels to the room as the original hours is higher than the renovated area. The main feature of the room is 9.6m window (split in to 4 panels). The windows is 3.5m high. We have spectacular views as we live halfway up a hill.
My taste is simple with clear lines, I prefer square things to intricacy. We wanted a fire that could be a focal point in the room, our main heating is air source heat pumps and the columns either side of the fire put heat out at the top and then the cold air is drawn back in through the bottom.
My favourite feature is that we can have 3 different heat levels depending on how we load the fire, we rarely need it fully stocked, and most day you find my mum snoozing on the couch with the fire lit.
What is your advice to anyone looking to renovate and choosing a fire?
I would give to anyone looking to renovate is, map it out on paper, waste money on magazines as they really can offer inspiration and don’t be scared to take a risk, but listen to your supplier they have usually seen it before and know what would and wouldn’t work with space.
Why did you choose your retailer?
During the project I looked on line, and found myself at the Siberian Showroom, mainly because my mum was looking for a small wood burner for her part of the house. We liked what we saw and were inspired by some of the fires in the showroom and loved the way slate was being used as a back drop. Also saw the bench for the fire, Scott visited us at home and discussed different option for fire and bench and what you see is what we got. Absolutely love the fire, even when its not on it has great impact and my builder liked it so much he brought his wife and she went on to buy the same model.
I would highly recommend both Stovax and Siberian Stoves, the pre-sale was great from both Sue and Scott, and when the installation happened Scott and Scotty were a pleasure to have on site.
