Give us a bit of an overview about your renovation project and your interior style.
This is our third renovation project – a 1960s house in Worcestershire. Our interior style is warm and welcoming – this is a family home and I couldn’t cope if everything was cream!
Why is it important to have a fire in this room?
We changed the downstairs layout completely so we actually lost two fires (albeit 1960s monstrosities!). When we built an extension to house our main living room we knew we wanted it to be a proper media room with a fire as the focal point. It’s a wide room, at 5.5m, so we knew we needed something special – a small woodburner would have looked lost.

What led you to choose the Onyx Avanti electric fire?
We did a lot of research and visited a lot of showrooms but were always disappointed by the electric fires we saw as they looked really unrealistic. When finally came across Onyx Avanti and they were a cut above the rest – so realistic and available in a 1.9m width.
What led you to choose the Onyx Avanti electric fire/what is it about this fire that makes it so well suited to the space?
The size and style of the fire make it fit perfectly in the room. It also has a great heat output, which helps make the space cosy. We built the media wall ourselves and it was very easy to fit the fire, which was a relief!

What’s your favourite part/feature about the Onyx Avanti fire?
For me, it’s the realistic flames. My girls love setting pink flames, which is nice for a novelty, but i think the fire really comes into its own when the embers are glows and the flames are flickering all the colours of autumn leaves.
Why did you go for the real log set and how does this choice affect the final aesthetic of the room?
The real log set was the reason we chose this fire. Artificial logs came be very good these days but, for me, there’s nothing that compares to the look of hand-picked and treated real logs. It makes it look really organic and adds lots of texture, which I love.

What was the greatest challenge or consideration when undergoing the project?
The biggest challenge for us was that we couldn’t afford to use many trades so we did most of the work ourselves…so it took three years! Still, they say good things come to those who wait!
Any tips for other people renovating or undergoing a similar project?
Take your time…just maybe not as long as we did! It’s really worth planning and creating mood boards of how the space will look before buying anything. Also think about the other rooms in your house – they should complement each other.
