The Professional XQ™ system with an internal installation

The Professional XQ™ system with an internal installation

There are many benefits to installing a wood burning fire or stove into your home, including supplying warmth and creating an alluring feature. Provided you burn wood that is well-seasoned and responsibly sourced, your wood will be a carbon-neutral energy source, as the amount of CO² released upon burning is roughly the same amount as is absorbed by the tree during its lifetime. With advantages such as these, it is easy to see why woodburning is an increasingly popular choice for home heating.

However, the need for a chimney or flue system can limit where you can position your stove in the home. If you want to install your stove into a room without a chimney, or into a more unconventional space, you may feel the odds are stacked against you.

Enter Stovax Professional XQ™ Stove & Fireplace Chimney systems; a complete internal & external flue system which can be configured to suit virtually any installation requirement, opening up new possibilities for you and your woodburning fire or stove. The Professional XQ™ system is highly versatile and can be installed either as a through wall installation or as an internal installation.

What makes the Professional XQ™ system so innovative? Stovax has designed the Professional XQ™ range to be safe and easy to install, using Twist-Lock connections to prevent accidental uncoupling. Sophisticated technical solutions, such as a Base wall support and spigot assembly that can support up to 12m of Chimney System, ensure that Professional XQ™ is on the cutting-edge of flue design.

Professional XQ™ is also innovative when it comes to aesthetics. The Decorative Single to Twin Adapter/Increaser provides a seamless join between the Professional XQ™ twin wall system and the single skinned enamelled flue pipe. If you have an internal installation, the Decorative Ceiling Cover Plate will ensure a clean finish to an opening through the ceiling. Overall the Professional XQ™ twin wall flue system is designed to avoid unsightly joins and untidy edges, ensuring your installation is as attractive as possible.

The Professional XQ™ system can be powder coated to almost any colour

Some properties may be under restrictions from their local planning authority regarding the colour of their flue system, but this is not an issue with the Professional XQ™ System, as all external components can be powder-coated to virtually any colour of your choice. So whether you are affected by planning regulations, or simply wish to create a certain aesthetic finish, the Professional XQ™ twin wall flue system can be customised to suit your needs.

You can rest assured that the Professional XQ™ range, has been tested and approved by BSRIA and has HETAS approval. The Professional XQ™ range is also CE approved by TUV SUD. Keeping your wood burning appliance clean and well-maintained is a vital part of ensuring it remains as attractive, efficient and safe as possible. Now is the perfect time of year to give your stove a thorough clean in preparation for the winter months. However, it is important to use professional cleaners and the correct equipment, as using the wrong products can result in damage to the stove.

This guide aims to help you understand the best products required to clean your wood burning appliance. Before cleaning, please refer to the instruction manual provided with your appliance. If you do not have the manual it can be downloaded from from our Technical Information page. For more information on where to find the best products to clean your log burner, and how to use them, please contact your local retailer.

Your appliance should be cleaned regularly, according to level of use. Before carrying out any cleaning, ensure that the appliance is cool to the touch. To begin you will need to remove the baffle, firebricks, grate and ashpan, referring to your instruction manual for precise details. There are also videos on www.stovax.tv to help guide you.

Ash Caddy

Ash Caddy

When emptying the ashpan, it is a good idea to have an ash caddy handy. This ensures that ash can be disposed of safely. De-ash your wood burning appliance at least once a week.

In the summer months; and more regularly when the appliance is being used frequently in the winter, you will need to clean out the ash from inside. To remove ash from inside the appliance, it is easiest to use a vacuum cleaner. The Ashclean system by Stovax is a filtration and collection attachment for vacuums that will protect your cleaner and help you gather the ash safely and effectively.

In order to wipe down the inside of the appliance you will need a brush or scraper. This will loosen any remaining ash and debris, which can then be vacuumed. For the grate and any related parts, a wire brush is the best tool to ensure no debris remains. The firebricks can become fragile after periods of use, so these will need to be handled delicately and cleaned with a soft brush.

Stovax uses the latest Airwash Technology in its wood burning appliances, helping to keep the stove glass as clean as possible. However, you will need to clean your glass from time to time. Stovax offers two Stove Glass Cleaners, a gel and a spray. The gel is not suitable for use on printed glass, but the spray is suitable for all glass types. For more advice on how to clean the glass, watch our video.

Thermolac Brush on Stove Paint

Thermolac Brush on Stove Paint

Some types of wood and solid fuel can cause a white residue to form on the glass. If this occurs it should be cleaned off at least once a week during periods of heavy usage. If the liquid cleaning agents recommended do not remove this residue Stovax offer a dry cleaning pad which will help remove heavy stains.

Now that the inside of your appliance is clean, you can turn your attention to the outside surfaces. For them to remain aesthetically pleasing, the outside of your appliance can be retouched with a Thermolac Paint, Colloidal Stove Dressing or Grate Polish, depending on the material and finish. If you are unsure about which product or colour is correct for your model, contact your Stovax retailer and quote the serial number found on the appliance date badge; the location of this can be found in the Instruction manual. Enamel stoves should be cleaned with a soft damp cloth only.

Now you should have the equipment you need to keep your wood burning appliance clean and efficient. As well as this cleaning routine, you should have your chimney swept at least once a year by an approved Chimney Sweep, who can be found on NACS (The National Association of Chimney Sweeps), APICS (The Association of Master Chimney Sweeps Ltd.) or The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps. It is also vital to have your appliance serviced by a HETAS approved engineer at least once a year, ideally in late summer.

With the correct cleaning products, a regular service and ensuring your chimney is swept by professionals, you should have no trouble enjoying your Stovax appliance for many years to come.

For those looking for a modern traditional wood burning stove, look no further than the Nordpeis Bergen for a uniquely Scandinavian twist.

Crafted from steel and cast iron, this characteristically designed wood burning stove offers up to a full 5.0kW heat output to effectively heat any living space to which it’s installed. Nordpeis Wood Burning Stove

One of the more unique features of the Bergen wood burning stove is its distinctly large firebox and flame picture. Allowing for logs up to 400mm to be comfortably placed inside and the glass measuring an impressive 16” in width, you can be sure that you’ll get a stunning view of the log fire. The integrated Airwash system will also be invaluable in keeping the glass clear from soot and tar build-up to enable you to enjoy your Nordpeis Bergen to the maximum.

Cleanburn technology is also combined into the Bergen wood burning stove by introducing pre-heated secondary air into the firebox to burn the excess hydrocarbons in the smoke. This results in more heat being delivered into the room and less going to waste up the chimney. And talking of chimneys, the Bergen stove is Smoke Control Approved* which means it can be installed and enjoyed to the full in any city or urban area as well as rural locations.

Wood Burning Stove Range Video

If you are considering purchasing a wood burning stove, this article will provide a useful guide on the benefits of owning a wood burning stove, the latest designs suitable for your home and where to purchase the chosen appliance.

What is a wood burning stove?

Stockton 5 wood burning stove

Stockton 5 wood burning stove

A wood burning stove is designed to specifically burn wood rather than other solid fuels, as the airflow in the appliance has been specially constructed to get the best performance from wood.Internally, a wood burning stove does not have a grate or ash pan on the floor of the stove. If you plan to burn a combination of materials such as peat/turf briquettes and other smokeless fuels in your stove, consider a multi-fuel stove which has a riddling grate. A riddling grate allows ash to disperse into a built-in ashpan which can be easily emptied. If you would like to find out more about the differences between wood burning and multi-fuel stoves, read our “do you know a wood burning stove from a multi-fuel stove” blog.

Why buy a wood burning stove?

Today, homeowners are considering buying a wood burning stove for many reasons. Primarily, owning a wood burning stove helps reduce household costs, especially with consistently rising gas and electricity prices. Depending on the heat output and the usage, a wood burning stove could use up to just £150 worth of wood per year, but this amount should still be significantly less than the cost of gas and electricity bills over the same period. Using wood as a fuel can be free for those households lucky enough to own a small holding or woodlands and can therefore gather fuel for free. For those without access to woodland, there are local wood suppliers that can provide homeowners with sustainably sourced seasoned wood.

Another reason to purchase a wood burning stove is the eco-friendly lifestyle choice it offers many homeowners. Wood is better in environmental terms as the amount of carbon dioxide realised into the atmosphere is approximately the same as that absorbed by the tree during growth. This term is often referred to as the “carbon neutral process”. By using wood as your fuel source for your stove, you are in fact offsetting your carbon footprint and becoming carbon-neutral.

If you would like to find out more about identifying good firewood, visit Stovax.tv. The website also offers a number of free instructional videos about keeping your appliance looking and performing at its best.

For a more thorough explanation on why homeowners should own a wood burning stove, please refer to the top 10 reasons to purchase a wood burning stove blog.

What are the latest wood burning stove designs?

The extensive designs from many wood burning stove manufacturers have allowed homeowners to select from a variety of models. Whether you are looking to upgrade your existing wood burning stove or thinking of installing in a city apartment, there are wood burning stoves for all types of home. You can even install a wood burning stove in properties without chimneys by using fully sealed twin wall flue systems!

Stovax, one of the UK’s industry leaders in manufacturing wood burning stoves, have a wide range of models to choose from. Homes with a more traditional look can opt for the popular Stockton and Brunel wood burning stove range – made from the finest cast iron, these wood burning stoves are attractively designed and will be a suitable companion for many winters to come. Its heat diffusing properties allow the warmth generated to be radiated slowly into the room for a more comfortable and even temperature. If you would like to find more about the history of cast iron, visit our why choose a cast iron log burner blog.

There are also more contemporarily designed wood burning stoves for those homeowners wanting to add a modern touch to their properties. The stylish Riva Studio Freestanding wood burning stove comes in four sizes: Riva Studio 500, Riva Studio 1, Riva Studio 2 and Riva Studio 3. Depending on the available space in your home, the largest model, the Riva Studio 3, emits a heat output of up to 11kw and allows logs of up to 500mm (20”). Not only can you mount these wood burning stoves directly on to a hearth, but you can also install them on to one of the stunning Riva benches. With a variety of styles and designs to choose from, the distinctive appearance of these contemporary wood burning stoves will create the perfect feature in your living space.

If you are looking to invest in a wood burning stove that can heat up both your domestic hot water and central heating, Stovax has a wide selection of contemporary and traditional boiler stoves to suit your home. Some models can even be purchased at a lower VAT rate. With the growing interest in becoming more eco-friendly, the Government has introduced the ‘Energy-Saving materials’ scheme last year which allows homeowners to buy certain appliances at a VAT of just 5%. Stovax has responded to this initiative and is now pleased to offer the Stockton 11 and the Stockton 14 high output stoves as specific wood burning models, which qualifies them for the reduced rate. Homeowners can now enjoy the atmosphere of a real fire, an exceptional heating performance throughout your home and they can also help you become independent from the grid.

Properties without chimneys now also have the choice to add a wood burning stove. With this in mind, Stovax has designed a twin-wall flue pipe system – the Professional XQ™ range – which allows rooms without chimneys to enjoy the benefits of a wood burning stove. Homeowners can even choose from a selection of twin wall components to suit both internal and external aesthetics of their home.

Another major development in stove design is the ability to install a wood burning stove in homes that are in major towns and cities often referred to as “Smoke Control Areas”. These homes are not allowed to emit any smoke from their chimney when using a wood burning stove, therefore, homes within the Smoke Control Areas that have a non-exempt appliance may only burn a list of authorised fuels that can be found on the DEFRA website. If you would like to burn logs and have a non-exempt appliance in a Smoke Control Area, you can install a Smoke Control Kit. If you live in a Smoke Control Area and would like to burn wood, look out for those wood burning stoves that have the “Smoke Control Area Exempt” logo which means that they are suitable for use in these areas. Stovax offer a wide range of these wood burning stoves in both traditional and contemporary designs.

All Stovax wood burning stoves are CE marked which means that they are independently tested to exacting European standards for both heating efficiency and emissions. To ensure that your product remains at the highest possible quality and safety standard, Stovax also provide a 5 year extended warranty for your wood burning stove. Find out more about Stovax’s 5 year extended warranty policy.

Who can install my wood burning stove?

If you have found a suitable wood burning stove for your home, it is important that you visit your local independent retailer to ensure that you have explored all the limitations and benefits of installing the appliance into your home.

It is integral that you also search for accredited installers that will install the wood burning stove safely, efficiently and adhere to installation compliance. Using an accredited HETAS installer means that your installation and servicing is carried out properly by a trained and competent individual.

Where can I buy a wood burning stove?

There are many reasons why you should consider installing a free standing wood burner into your home. Here are some of the many benefits.

High efficiency rates
A free standing wood burner or multi-fuel stove such as the Huntingdon 35, has an efficiency rate of up to 82%. The heat output is released slowly thanks to the use of cast iron in its manufacture. Cast iron is a traditional material for stoves as it allows heat to be diffused to give an even output for a comfortable, ambient room temperature.

Using a renewable fuel source
Wood logs are a renewable fuel provided that you purchase from a reputable supplier who sources from well managed woodland. Burning wood is also largely carbon neutral as the carbon dioxide given off during combustion is roughly equivalent to that absorbed by the tree during its growth. Wood will also give off carbon dioxide when left to rot so it’s worth utilising logs to generate useful heat for your home.

Cleanburn and Airwash help you to make the most of your fuel
By continually investing in technology and research, Stovax offer advanced features in most of their free standing wood burners. A triple air system provides thermal efficiency, a cleaner burn and the ability to control the flame picture.

Airwash keeps your stove glass clear by drawing air down the inside of the door to prevent soot and other combustion particles from coming into contact with its surface. Primary air aids combustion to create efficient ignition while
Cleanburn introduces pre-heated air into the firebox to burn off excess hydrocarbons; this makes efficient use of your fuel whilst simultaneously preventing excess soot being deposited in your home’s chimney flue where it can hinder the burning process.

A free standing wood burning boiler such as the Stockton 14HB is eligible for a reduced VAT rate.

A free standing wood burning boiler such as the Stockton 14HB is eligible for a reduced VAT rate.

Wood burning boiler stoves heat your domestic hot water and are available with a reduced VAT rate
There has arguably never been a better time to invest in a boiler stove. They can be linked to an existing central heating system and will provide not only radiant heat for the room but enough hot water for up to 19 radiators. Furthermore dedicated free standing wood burning boiler stoves, such as the Stockton 11 or Stockton 14 from Stovax are currently eligible for a reduced VAT rate of just 5% because they are listed under the Government’s ‘Energy-Saving Materials’ initiative.

Smoke Control Approved – free standing wood burners for towns & cities
Many wood burning stoves are now eligible to be burned in designated Smoke Control Areas thanks to the addition of a Smoke Control Kit. This ensures that the stove is sufficiently clean burning to maintain the requirements of the Clean Air Act 1993. Now homes in cities and towns as well as rural areas may enjoy the many benefits of a free standing wood burner.

Britain has a long history of using cast iron for household appliances. It is one of the materials that fed the success of the Industrial Revolution due to the UK’s once plentiful natural supply of coal, iron ore and water.

Using cast iron became popular in Britain

Using cast iron became popular in Britain

As a result, the use of cast iron thrived and the manufacture of products using this material became widespread and encompassed many areas of production. In the Victorian era it became the material of objects from fencing to cart wheels and fireplaces to kitchen pots, pans and cooking ranges.

Over the water in Europe, cast iron was a material used for the manufacture of wood burning stoves; their purpose to provide essential warmth for the home. Facilitated by the extensive acreage of forest that supplied the logs for wood burning, continental Europe led the way in utilising this effective method of heating for its frequently long and bitterly cold winters.

The UK soon followed suit and embraced wood burning with households installing a log burner in place of or to complement an existing fireplace. Cast iron, being so widely available and cheap, quickly became the traditional material for premium wood burners. Today, despite advances in the production of steel, cast iron is still a popular choice for stove manufacturers due to its heat diffusing properties which allow the warmth generated to be radiated slowly into the room for a comfortable and even temperature. Some stoves combine cast iron with steel – using the heavy duty, cost effective qualities of the latter with the energy efficiency of the former.

Cast iron is also recommended by its malleability which allows it to be moulded into a variety of designs to create a wealth of intricate and elegant detail. The Huntingdon stove by Stovax demonstrates this, with its beautifully crafted tracery door design securing its aesthetic reputation.

Wood Burning Stoves

Nothing creates the perfect ambiance on a cold winter’s day than the warmth from a wood burner. The popularity of burning wood has significantly increased in the last few years and some of the reasons for this include: controlling costs by moving to a more sustainable fuel, wanting to become more carbon-neutral or simply wanting to enjoy a real fire! This has created a demand from stove and fire manufacturers to design highly efficient and stylish wood burners that can be enjoyed in a range of homes.

If you are a homeowner looking to install a wood burner, here are the Top 10 reasons why you should purchase one today.

1. Wood is a renewable energy and helps save on monthly bills

Woodlands

Select logs from a reputable local wood supplier

With rising fuel costs, many homeowners are seeking alternative ways to heat their homes. Burning wood is not only better for the environment but it can also offer a carbon neutral, wholly sustainable heat source. Wood is renewable and burning it is a carbon-neutral process, so the amount of CO2 it releases into the atmosphere as it burns is the same as that absorbed by a tree as it grows. If you are looking for local wood suppliers for your wood burning stove or fire, it is integral to select suppliers with sustainable plantations and cultivated woodland. This helps improve biodiversity, support jobs in the forestry industry and ensure that there is enough timber to meet future demands in years to come.

2. Airwash technology

Airwash and Cleanburn technology

Airwash and Cleanburn technology

Most wood burners integrate Airwash technology which is achieved by air being drawn into the top of the stove and heated in the central air chamber before being directed down behind the glass door to create a screen between the fire and the glass. As a result, fuller flames can be enjoyed from the fire without the glass becoming streaked with soot.

3. Cleanburn technology

Cleanburn technology is another feature that can be found in a wood burning stove or fire. It is a system by which warm air is introduced into the firebox just above the normal height of the fire. The effect is to allow the combustion of unburned hydrocarbons in the smoke stream which provides a “cleaner burn” (i.e less soot particles going up the chimney/flue and into the atmosphere). This also generates more heat into the room and less going up the chimney.

4. CE Approved

All Stovax wood burning stoves and fires are CE marked. This means that they have been independently tested to exacting European standards for both heating efficiency and emissions. This widely recognised acknowledgement of the highest standards is a testament to our commitment to employing the best procedures and practices and creating the very finest, quality appliances.

5. Highly efficient wood burning stoves and fires

Open fires usually have an efficiency of up to 10-20% where as a wood burning stove or fire will have a heating efficiency of up to 86%. High efficiency wood burners maintain most of the heat inside your home with less going to waste up the chimney.

6. Suitability for Smoke Control Areas

One of the major developments in stove design is the extensive availability of wood burners that are suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas. Living in a Smoke Control Area means that homes are not allowed to emit any smoke from their chimney when using a wood burner. If you own a wood burning stove or fire that is not exempt, please visit DEFRA to see a list of authorised smokeless fuels that you may be allowed to burn. Otherwise, seek advice from your local retailer to find out about installing a Smoke Control kit in your non-exempt wood burner. If you are looking to fit a wood burning stove or fire in your urban home, city dwellers can now choose from the vast majority of wood burners that are suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas.

7. Suitability for use in properties without a chimney

Homeowners without a chimney now have the possibility to add a wood burning stove or fire into their properties. By fitting a twin-wall pipe system such as the Stovax Professional XQ™, you are now able to enjoy the flames of a real log fire in your home. This will also allow you to investigate other rooms such as conservatories or family rooms which would benefit from the focal point a wood burner creates.

8. A wide selection of wood burning stoves and fires

For over 30 years, Stovax has been dedicated to the development, manufacturing and distribution of high quality wood burning and multi-fuel stoves, fires and fireplaces. Stovax currently offer the largest range of traditional and contemporary designs in the UK and if you are looking at installing a double sided inset wood burning fire, the Stovax Riva Studio Duplex is the perfect connecting feature between two separate rooms. They will also be able to show you a selection of appliances locally in their showroom – often fully operational – so you can get a good idea of what a fire or stove looks like when burning. It is also vitally important that your chosen installer is approved and up to date with the latest regulations.
